Before attempting to ollie on a skateboard you must learn to ride around in order to gain your balance. Skateboarding is all about balance. In order to get the board to pop up in the air it is important to start with a level center of gravity. Practice by lining up your shoulders to be square with your feet. Try to relax, as you will naturally balance over your board just as if you were standing on the ground.
Once you become comfortable riding and pushing around on your skateboard, it’s time to take it to the next level. Don’t always expect to get things first try, especially when your learning. Skateboarding can be one of the most rewarding experiences. This is because it is difficult. It takes dedication and many years of practice to become like the guys doing lots of tricks.
The only rule in skateboarding is to have fun. Don’t get down on yourself if it takes longer to learn something than your friends, it’s all part of it. You will find that as you progress, your own unique style will emerge; your strengths and skills will shine through more with the tricks that you have fun with. The three steps to learning how to skateboard are PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
Step on your board. Position your front foot about two thirds of the way to the front bolts, about 2 to 3 inches back.
Point your back toe in the center of the tail, near the end of the deck. Pretend that you are about to jump off of your toes.
Crouch down and prepare to jump off of your back foot. You want to kick straight down and quickly with your back foot, as to make a snapping motion while you jump into the air.
As you begin to leave the ground slide your front foot towards the front bolts. The outside of your foot should roll toward the grip tape. This will create friction to help the board stick to your feet.
Near the top of your jump, level out in the air. Position your feet to land over the bolts of your skateboard and brace for impact.
Absorb the shock of your jump as you hit the ground and expect to ride away. If you don’t expect to land on your board, you risk slipping out and falling.
Ride away. Smile. Do it again and again until you can ollie as high as you can jump.
